To help your poinsettias thrive in your home during the holidays, follow these tips:

Light: Place your poinsettia in a bright location where it will receive at least 6 hours of bright, indirect sunlight each day. Placing it in direct sunlight may fade the color of the bracts. If direct sunlight cannot be avoided, use light-colored shades or sheer curtains to filter the sunlight.

Temperature: Excessive heat will cause leaves to turn yellow and fall off, and flower buds to wither prematurely. Daytime temperatures should not exceed 70°F. Don't place your poinsettias near drafts, excessive heat, or dry air from appliances, fireplaces, or air ducts. Chilling damage is also a problem and can cause premature leaf drop if temperatures drop below 50°F.

Water and Fertilizer: Poinsettias require moderately moist soil. Water thoroughly when the soil surface feels dry to the touch. Never allow the potting mix to dry completely, and never place the plant in standing water. When watering, be sure to remove the plant from its decorative pot cover. Water until water seeps through the drainage holes and the soil is completely saturated. Do not fertilize poinsettias while they are blooming.

Pests that attack poinsettias are also common on many other plants. The most common pest is mealybugs. Other pests of poinsettias include mealybugs, soft scale insects and spider mites. Mealybugs and whiteflies can be easily controlled by soaking the soil with imidacloprid or using imidacloprid-containing plant spikes inserted into the soil (such as Bayer Advanced 2-in-1 Insect Control Plus Fertilizer Plant Spikes). Are poinsettia plants poisonous?

Poinsettia plants are not considered poisonous. Since the sap is milky and the leaves have a rather unpleasant taste, children are unlikely to consume large amounts. However, consuming the leaves may cause stomach pain, diarrhea, or vomiting. The milky sap may irritate the skin and cause a minor rash. Wash skin with soap and water. Additionally, if the juice comes into contact with your eyes, it may cause irritation and redness. Rinse eyes with water.
